Calcup 4 -August 14
Windy Cove

Report from a: We had 1 pretty windy race and then decided to call it a day after the first race produced 4 injuries (88 with a very serious looking bleeding head which was rushed to the hospital, ML and CWF with smashed ribs, and 22 with a bleeding ankle).

It was pretty darn windy, and then it kept building. Check the graph for sherman. We started race 1 at 1:52pm. In retrospect it was a good decision to call it as I was getting blown off the water later on my 5.3 sail and wave board right around the time we would've been running the long distance race (averaging 30's, gusts almost at 40).

Report from S3: The race committee (Mike P, Lynn and Cindy) along with Mike's wife, Tina, met for breakfast in Martinez on the way up to Windy Cove. I had looked at Iwindsurf before I left home and it was already 25+ at Sherman Island. When we got to Windy Cove, it looked as if the wind was in the low 20's and gusty, coming onshore about 45 degrees to the river as it flows by Windy Cove.

Mike put the boat in the water and set a windward mark down river on the north (opposite) side, another mark near shore (Windy Cove side) just upriver of Windy Cove, and a start/finish mark just offshore of Windy Cove so that the races could be run from cliff overlooking the beach. The course was windward mark to starboard, down wind along the north shore (up river) to a starboard jibe around a channel marker (up river of Windy Cove), downwind across the river to starboard jibe the mark near shore just around the corner from of Windy Cove and back upwind to the start/finish line. We intended to run 3 races and then the usual long distance race around the island.

The wind seemed to not be building appreciably from the time we rigged to the start of the first race. David Wells was the first out and said a 9 was good. I went out on a 9 shortly after and checked out the course. The wind wasn't all that strong, but it was gusty and the gusts often had a healthy direction change in them which definitely made it a challenge.

In the first (and only) race, I started at the pin end along with David, Rob and Mike P. Mike had good speed going up under the island and was out in front but below Rob, David and I. Finally everyone tacked to head out across the river. Going out across the river, I could see people struggling with the gusts and Mike P ended up getting lifted with the board up upside down. Again, I was above David and Rob and took it further in toward the north shore hoping to get a lift after I tacked.

On the final beat to the windward mark, I did indeed get the lift I was hoping for but I was also getting worked by the gusts coming off the shore. I was in great shape for a port rounding at the windward mark when I realized that wasn't the course so I began to reach down toward the mark on starboard with David and Rob coming in on port. We all reached the mark around the same time with David slightly in the lead. There was a good flood running and David made it over the mark, but Rob understood and had to tack. I tacked not noticing how much flood there
was and also understood. Rob tacked again and still understood. Rob and I finally made it over the mark in the next series of tacks but by that time David was well on his way down wind. Rob was next and I was following a bit closer to shore than Rob.

It was pretty windy and gusty and Rob was running deeper than I was but not in the 4th or 5th strap yet. I was running 6 cm less fin than Rob and was able to get into and stay in the 5th strap and was running in the smoother water nearer the shore trying to be careful not to get launched in one of the veering gusts. The next thing I saw was David 2/3s of the way down the course jibing early and heading across the river. I assumed he'd picked the wrong channel marker to jibe. I'd been steadily gaining on Rob and finally passed him in a big gust. About that
time he (told me later) figured that the water state had calmed down enough for him to get into the 5th strap and I could hear him coming up behind me. I got to the leeward channel marker and jibed immediately. Rob took it a bit further before he jibed because during pre race practice, we both had some trouble making it across the river to the leeward mark. Fortunately for me there was no problem this time and I was easily able to overstand the leeward mark and come up hard underneath it and beat to the finish with Rob a close 2nd.

When we got into shore and stowed our equipment, we began to watch the people still out on the water. That's when we noticed Kyle sitting on his board with it upside down floating in the flood and wind up the middle of the river. David immediately got on his board and sailed out to him and soon, Kyle water started and sailed in. Apparently he'd been trying to position the board for a water start near the windward mark and board had been lifted by a piece of chop and a gust hitting him in the head with the fin. He was pretty bloody. As Gary and John were
taking care of him, getting him ready to go into Anitoch for stitches, some other people came in banged up so we decided to call it a day. Probably just as well because the wind kept building the rest of the afternoon. ...........Steve

Report from US008:For those of you who did not see it, Kyle Moore got hit in the head with his fin while trying to clear his sail after a fall close to the finish line. He hit a small artery so blood was shooting about 3 feet from his head. He said he had trouble getting in because every time he took his hand of the cut the blood shot across his board. Lucky no sharks in the Delta. When he got to shore he was covered in blood. We got the bleeding stopped and took him to the E.R. in Antioch. He got stitched up and was able to drive himself home. I talked to him last night and other than swelling and pain he is doing fine. Thanks to every one who helped. I have to say that this group of people has always pitched in when ever a sailor has been in trouble. As a side note I sailed Sherman Is. Sun. It was a very mellow 9.8 warm flat day. Vlade was ther and said he had a great time Sat. on his 4.5! What a difference a day can make. Aloha, Gary

Report from 46: Man. Its not why didn't Rob win it its why didn't I win it. I mean I was 30-40 seconds in front after rounding the windward mark in first place. I look back and see Rob and Steve triple tack , yes triple tack the whether mark. I am so far in front I am scared and can't even see anyone behind me. So here comes the leward gybe mark - this ones wrapped up baby my first cal cup bullet. Then after sailing I realize I can't see the last leward mark. The course was a short last leg back across the river. OUCH I gybed at the wrong mark. Oh Man. It just goes to show you a lot of this is state of mind. I am so used to the pre race strategy - just follow Rob - I was totally unprepared to be in front. Never again. I will have a whole new outlook now that I have had the taste of being out there. But of course I snatched Defeat from the jaws of victory. It was a lot of fun and heavy wind is definitely my specialty. I was on 9.0 Aerotech and Select 64. The ol' exocet was working well because it was a nice flood and pretty smooth. I am sorry for all the carnage that was out there but lets do Rio Again. We missed ya Z - whats this I hear about you being tired or formula? Wasn't that you I saw slogging aroung on bump and Jump gear while Soheil and I did South tower to alcatraz laps lit up? You'll be back!...........46 - out

Another Report from 46: Just to add a little Update to my previous report - Kyle was in fact hurt - what at least at first glance looked like he was Hurt Bad. He was sitting on his boards bottom when I got out to him. He was covered in blood - I was like - Oh God we got to get this guy in fast. So I asked him was his equipment ok - he said - I think so. So then I started taking inventory and everyhthing looked in one piece except for a few new holes on the bottom of the board. Ok we gotta get in man - no time to wait for a boat - as a trained Red Cross life guard I knew if he lost consciousness I would be able to get at him if he fell but it was worth the risk as I could not assess the sevrity of the wound and by the prolific blood I assumed the worse. I told him to uphaul - kind of yelling at him to motivatee him - KYLE NOW WE GO - When he took his hand off his head to uphaul - Spurt - a good one foot spurt came out. I told him to STOP get back on the board . I then proceeded to swim his rig in to waterstart position. Told him to Jump off the board. We then flipped his board over so the fin was down. I grabbed the top of the mast and lifted it out of the water with Kyle lifting too - He waterstarted - And headed to the beach. I now swam to get to my gear now down river in the flood so I could track Kyle to the beach in case he fell. Once kyle got the beach the cal cup team sprung in to action. John davenport grabbed his gear, We told Kyle go for shore and Dr Peer went to help him while Ben Bamer held on to the Doc's gear. John and Rob hartman with Help fo Chenda and Soheil and other racers tried to locate all of Kyles gear. In the meantime Lyn olinger already had Ice out. Within like 2 minutes later Gary had Kyle wrapped in a Ace Bandage and Icing. Then Gary took Klye to the hospital. By that time fellow north board head Hartman had all of Kyles stuff de-rigged and in his Car! It was true team work. Unfortunately With so many people in the water still with holding their boards and some one else's board too we had another casualty - The Doc's Sailworks 9.0 had a panel rip. Not knowing how or where it came from Bamer never even questioned how or why and Proclaimed "I am fixing Garys Sail' No questions asked. I am proud to be associated with such a great group of people. It really feels good knowing you guys would all do the same for any of us. The best news was hearing Kyle was going to be OK. However can we get a Stitch Count for the Results!!!

Thanks for the reports .
