Southern Calcup 1-April Long Beach Race.
The afternoon
started with a tiny bit of drizzle and a whole lot promise of wind. The
forecast called for afternoon clearing and you could see blue ski in the
west, and did I mention that there was wind in the forecast as
well. In fact its was 14-16kts during the 12:30 skippers meeting and we
were all getting excited-there was going to be plenty of wind for racing
this afternoon.
By 1:30
pm all were ready and we started racing. Peter B, who by the way placed
in the top 7 in the 1984 Olympics and in the top 10 in the Worlds that year,
showed us we need to pay attention to him on the race course, in the first
race by winning it. We banged out two more then took a break in the sunshine
and had a little snack. As we were resting the wind wasn't, as it built
to 16-20kts and off we went in the land of higher wind racing where Eric
showed us that all that time he spent in the SF bay last year didn't go
to waste. He promised to return later this year for a rematch and maybe
bring some of his new playmates from the Bay. So after 6 races we called
it a day and it was only 4:30 and still blowing in the high teens to low
twenties, sand flying everywhere-a great race day.
