Course Racing Classic
- August 8 and 10, 2003
REPORT
FROM Z
I only rigged the 9.0. It was looking really good. I went out for a practice
run but didn't make it past the beach. I stepped on something sharp and
I think it stuck in deep........I'm stopping to dig it out now that it's
been 5 days. The X-acto knife is sharp and clean. Let's cut and cut.....what's
this? A 3 mm sliver of brown glass. Damn! Budweiser! It's amazing how pain
is almost forgotten when the adrenaline of racing has taken over your mind
and body. Nevertheless, the "shrapnel" would bother me through
the whole weekend until just now. It's out.
I definitely felt it on the first race but I had such a good, clean start
on port, that making it to windward in 1st place took the pain away. I was
well ahead of Mike Z. as we're coming down to the Club for the first jibe
which by the way I made but was shortly knocked down by a gust. It wasn't
dyslexia Chris. There goes a possible bullet. Mike WAS a good 100 ft behind.
There was only one way he would beat me and I gave it to him on a silver
platter. I guess he didn't like my gift. He was waterstarting at the leeward
mark as I was coming down. He must have said something bad about me and
his bad karma got the best of him. I don't think I've ever seen Mike wet.
By the way, all my starts were on port that first day and they all payed
off.
Anyway, let's now jump to the last race when I was broadside from behind by a rogue sailor. I won't mention his name but he beat me by 1 point in that race. We bounced off each other like cue balls but neither fell in. Just shy of a miracle. I'll spare you the rest of it but it was windy and very competitive. All the racers are in great shape and mostly dialed into their gear. It was great racing with some out of townies and I hope next year will bring them on again. I hope to hear your story too.
