Calcup 3 -June 28, 2003 -Pt. Isabela
Report from Gary Peer - US008: The usual suspects were there along with some visiting dignitaries including Dale Cook from the Gorge. The winds were quite strong especially out at the windward mark. There was pretty intense chop and waves at the windward mark as well. Most racers were on 9.0-9.3 due to the conditions. The coarse was upwind, downwind with a gate in the middle. At times the fog was in and down to water level making identifying the marks more difficult. There were two starts, C fleet was first with A and B fleet starting together. There was an unfortunate accident in the first race resulting in an injury to Mike Percy which required a hospital visit for stitches. Being in the back of the pack I could not tell how the top racers did. It looks like Dale, Rob and Bill, were all really close. Steve S. took first in the second race, and he, Chris and Steve B. were just behind the top three. Linda Moroz was back racing and looked good dominating the C fleet. If I may make a comment on the B fleet results in race 3 Lynn should have been listed as #1 with a 0.7 score and I should have been listed as #2 with a 2 score. It looked like every one had a great day of challenging racing, and they were looking forward to the next race. Once again thank you for you efforts to create these excellent results tables, Yours truly Gary Peer US008
Report
from Soheil Zahedi- a:
Today's calcup racing
was definitely a strange one. It felt like full moon, or halloween or
something... First off, they changed the starts so that the "C"
fleet started first, and then the "B" and A" fleets started
together. This put 4 people on the start line for the "C"'s
and about 50 on the line for the 2nd start (ok I'm exaggerating, but there
were a bunch of out of town guests in addition to all the usual "A"
and "B" fleeters...). So, we all finally get to the start line
(all except for Bob, but more on that later), and the first race gets
going and it's windier
than anything and we sail and disappear onto a soupy fog on the upwind.
By the time we get down the course and back up to the finish, the weird
day has already claimed it's first victim as ercey has to go to the hospital
on account of a major gash in his leg from a collision. As I'm sitting
on my board contemplating the news of Percey's mishap and the blood in
the water between heats, a figure wearing what looks like an executioner's
mask sails up out of the mist, shaking his fist and making strange noises.
The strange man's sail says "ML" on it, but it's a Neil Pryde
sail!?!
Very strange... The next few heats were pretty uneventful except for having
to deal with the massive gusts and having to navigate by feel (or ronstan
timer) due to the soupy fog. Through the soup, I notice that we're counting
down the first five minutes for the "C" fleet start, but nobody
is starting... I also manage to catch one fish on the fin that cuts 2
nice deep notches on my fin with its sharp bones. After bobbing in the
soup for what seemed like forever while some people went back to the beach
for a break, we got one more race off (with me going sideways with my
newly re-designed fin) and then they called it a day. While I'm derigging
I see Bob walking up with his gear in a bundle under his arm, and his
feet looking a lot worse for wear. It turns out that he broke his mast
on the way out to the first start, drifted, swam, and eventually made
land about a mile up from the parking lot, walked his stuff back and took
out his 2nd rig to try and catch the last few heats. On his way out the
2nd time, he broke the 2nd rig's mast! He ends up drifting to the same
place about a mile up, and has to walk his stuff back again, just in time
to see us all packing up! Freaky day... -a
Report
from Eric Christianson- 44: For
those of us who arrived early, it already looked like it was going to
be a windy day. Whitecaps were everywhere by 10:30. A river of fog was
snaking along the Bay from the Gate, past Angel, along to Brooks Island,
following the windiest path.
The racecourse was windward/leeward with a downwind gate in the middle.
A big fleet showed up to race, including pro Dale Cook and Anil from the
Gorge, a rare (at least lately) CalCup appearance from Bill Weir, as well
as a newcomer Gabor from LA (who was gambling a bit as 9.8 was his smallest
sail). From the shore I saw Steve Sylvester sail off toward the start
on his 9.8, then turn around promptly to get his 9.0. I'm guessing most
people left the beach on 9.8's or 9.0's. Probably many who grabbed the
9.8's were wishing for 9.0's when they found out just how much windier
it was on the course than on shore. I should have followed Steve's lead
but instead decided to try 9.8.
The conditions were foggy, choppy, and windy, maybe more so than the wind
report indicates. Seemed a pretty solid 20-30+ mph for the most part,
though it was a bit lighter in the last two. And in certainly more than
one race, the marks were obscured by fog until you got closer. On an unfortunate
note, there was a bad collision between two sailors in the first race.
We hope they're back on the water fully recovered soon.
We raced 3 races, had a half hour break, then raced 2 more. As it had
been pretty windy and choppy, quite a few of the 9.8's came in and switched
to their 9.0's. Even Rob and I think Dale Cook switched to their 9's;
I think Dale said it was the first time he'd used his! Zajicek was on
9.8 all day, though I doubt this was his preference. Steve Bodner seemed
to handle the 9.8 well. Ben Bamer was one who stayed on his 9.8 all day
and liked it; I believe he has yet to use his 9.0 this year.
The day was pretty
intense to me, and this time much of what happened in the individual races
runs together. In the end, it was another great day with lots of challenging
racing. Thanks again to Mike P., Steve S., Rob, Cindi, Jean, and everyone
else who makes CalCup happen. We all really appreciate it.
Report from Steve Sylvester- S3: June 28th's CalCup was held on the day that the hot spell broke. It was already windy at Pt. Isabel when the racers began to arrive around 11 a.m. The fog was running in river over Brooks Island on its way up to the Delta and Angle Island was reporting over 30 mph. We had a number of hot shots from out of town show up - Joe Roth, Gabor and Eric Christianson from L.A. along with Dale Cook and a friend - CAN777 from the Gorge. Bill Weir and Linda Moroz were also in attendance making for a very competitive fleet.
The races were windy
- overpowered 9.8s and wound 9.0s - especially at the upwind mark. We
had 5 races on an upwind downwind course with a gate in the middle using
the A buoy off Brooks Island as the windward mark. We were contemplating
a 6th race but most everyone seemed pretty tuckered by the end of the
5th race so we called it for the day. Also, as it turned out, shortly
after we called the racing, the fog closed in on the most of Brooks Island
and the windward mark so it was just as well. The only bummer of the day
was a collision between Mike Percey and
Royce Yen. Fortunately, neither was seriously hurt though Mike had to
make a visit
the emergency room for stitches in his leg. We all wish him a speedy recovery.
We also wish to thank a sterling race committee - Cindy Ross, Reto Fuller and Ben Ailes - for some great racing!
Report from Steve Bodner - USA420: Set up from land looked decent with lots of chop coming across east bay. Forecast called for light wind but by 1pm skippers meeting it was already 15-20k.and building. Most everybody rigging 9.8's and 9.0's. Race 1, 2 and 3 off quickly with most of the fleet off the line to the left side to port layline. A few early tackers to the right seemed to pay off getting to top mark first and had advantage of starboard tack at the top of the course. By race 3 Rob Hartman, Bill Wier, Chris Radkowski and myself all started on port and got to the right side first -fighting adverse chop on the way there. This seemed to pay off but not by much as Steve Sylvester snuck in on the port layline close to the mark. Downwind it was a challange to stay in control on starboard through all that chop but not much tactical advantage either way as we all had to come back though a middle gate and proceed to leeward mark. This brings the fleet closer together and definatly puts an emphasis on quality gybes when you need them most. The leeward mark rounding was another important set up where a few places could definatly be gained or lost. Depending on the shift, it was a one tack beat up to the finish line so getting a good lane was key! In race 4 Steve Sylvester was just behind me at the leeward mark but in clean air. I was pinching it with C-Rad just ahead and getting his bad air. This forced me to foot off and tack for the finish line while Steve S was free to pinch up and just beat me across the line. Mike Z also showed a rare moment of mortality just 100 feet shy of the line as he went to tack and blew it letting Dale, Rob, Steve, Chris , Bill and myself pass him to the finish! Just like the short friday night races at StFYC, tacks and gybes are just as important as speed off the line!
Thanks again to Cindy Ivan, and the photographer from AW (the impromptu race commitee) for getting 5 races off back to back without flaw!
